What is the Premier League?
The Premier League is the top tier of English professional football, founded in 1992. Its 20 clubs play a 38-match home-and-away season that typically runs from August to May. It generates more broadcasting revenue than any other football league in the world, and that financial strength helps attract many of the world's top players and managers — one reason it is often regarded as the highest-level league in world football.
Promotion and relegation
At the end of each season, the bottom 3 clubs are relegated to the second-tier EFL Championship, and are replaced by the top 3 clubs promoted from the Championship.
European qualification
The top 4 clubs typically qualify for the UEFA Champions League, 5th place for the UEFA Europa League, and 6th place for the UEFA Conference League, though cup results can shift these places.
What is "The Big 6"?
Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur are commonly known as "The Big 6" for their financial power, historical success, and global popularity.
How the points system works
Clubs earn 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 for a loss. When clubs are level on points, goal difference (goals scored minus goals conceded) determines their position in the table.
What is the transfer window?
The transfer window refers to set periods when clubs can buy and sell players: a summer window (roughly June through the end of August) and a winter window (1-31 January). If the deadline falls on a weekend, it moves to the next business day. The 2025-26 winter window closed around 7:00 JST on 3 February 2026, and the 2026-27 summer deadline is 7:00 JST on Wednesday, 2 September 2026. The final day is known as "deadline day," famous for a flurry of last-minute deals.
What are "newly promoted clubs"?
Clubs promoted from the second-tier EFL Championship the previous season are known as newly promoted clubs. Often working with smaller budgets, they tend to be involved in the relegation battle early in the season.
